Founding

Dorisa (도리사) is known to have been founded in 417, in the time of King Nulji (눌지왕), 19th king of Silla, by Monk Ado / Ado Hwasang (아도화상), a monk from Goguryeo who came to spread Buddhism in Silla, where it was not yet known. It is known as the birthplace of Haedong (Korean) Buddhism and the first temple built in Silla.

The name

Monk Ado was travelling in search of a place to practise. It is said that here, even though it was winter, he saw peach and plum blossoms in full bloom and knew this was a good site.

The temple is said to have been built with an offering from Morye Jangja (모례장자), and named Dorisa after “do” (도, peach) and “i” (이, plum).

The grounds

An ancient temple with a thousand years of history, Dorisa draws both believers and travellers with its beautiful scenery and the quiet calm of a temple.
